Understanding Anger (What the Bible Says)
May 23, 2023 - 20 min
What does the Bible have to say about anger? When we're talking about the Biblical application, or understanding of what anger is, we're talking about what's happening in the heart. Early philosophers and scientists, like Aristotle, believed the heart was the place to find the human soul, and the Bible, in some ways, supports this. The Bible has a lot to say about anger, and as a Christian first, and someone with degrees in Psychology and Counseling second, I choose to look at science through the lens of scripture. In today's episode we're going to define the following things: What IS "righteous anger," and can we really use it as an excuse? Why does the Bible say we experience anger? What does anger achieve for us? Are we getting what we want? Where does anger come from?  What should a believer do when they're experiencing sinful anger? Tune in now, and discover what the Bible has to say about what happens in our hearts (and what we can do to overcome)! Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide,  Praying God's Word for Your Angry Child, by Tricia Goyer. Praying for your angry child is essential because it is a way to invite God into your child’s life. As parents, we want the best for our children. We can read books, attend therapy sessions, and try different techniques. Ultimately, we are still determining what we can do. However, when we pray for our children, we ask God to intervene. We acknowledge that we cannot fix everything independently and surrender our children to God’s care Praying for your angry child doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming, it just has to be done. Interrupting the Cycle of Anger
May 16, 2023 - 13 min
I'm a reactor. My gut response is to react to the circumstances of life. I can feel it bodily. My heart rate speeds up, my face gets flushed, and I start having ALL the thoughts. All of them—good, bad, and everything in between. In 20 seconds or less, my mind has already contemplated every worst-case scenario and may or may not have tried to convince me they're eminent. Thankfully, I've almost (key word, almost) mastered learning not to speak of or act on them until I've had time to process them privately. That's a choice I've realized I need to make that goes against what I'm actually feeling on the inside. It's a choice we all have as the Spirit of God is at work in us. On this week's episode of the podcast, we'll learn about the cycle of anger, and how we can learn to interrupt it in ourselves, and then help our children do the same thing. Tune in now! Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide,  Praying God's Word for Your Angry Child, by Tricia Goyer. Praying for your angry child is essential because it is a way to invite God into your child’s life. As parents, we want the best for our children. Understanding Anger (The Science)
May 9, 2023 - 18 min
What is anger? We've all felt it at one time or another, and most of us understand that it's a reasonable, human response. But how does Science define anger? What does it look like in our children? How can we recognize it? More than that, how can we understand what's happening in our minds and bodies when we get mad, and how can that translate to helping our children? That's what I'm going to attempt to settle for us in today's episode. Learn more about how anger works, the response it creates in our bodies, the cycle our emotions take when we experience it, and how it relates to other emotions in this short, but information-packed episode. Calming Angry Kids, with Tricia Goyer
May 2, 2023 - 48 min
To kick off our conversation about angry kids this month, I dug all the way back in the archives of the Million Praying Moms podcast to episode #17, where we interviewed author, podcaster, and mom, Tricia Goyer about her new book at that time called Calming Angry Kids. As I tried to plan for this season, I just couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather have share with you on this topic, so I decided to clean up the older episode a bit and share it again today. For those of you who are new around here, the extra voice you'll hear is that of my previous ministry partner and cohost, Erin Mohring, whom we all miss dearly. In this episode, Tricia walks us through what she's learned from raising, fostering, and adopting a family of ten children. You won't want to miss it. Teaching Kids the Power of Belonging to God
April 18, 2023 - 11 min
All human beings have an innate desire to belong, and nowhere does it shine so brightly than in our children. I actually prayed for God to give me boys so that I could raise them to be different. It only took about 12 years for me to realize that intentionally trying to raise men who were different would make them, you know, different. And what's the one thing kids want LESS than anything else??? To be different. Which means this goal I set for myself hasn't always been an easy parenting task. A lot of times, the ways I want my boys to be different set them apart in a way that feels lonely to them, isolating, and, as I already stated, all human beings, especially kids, have an innate desire to belong. The truth is that my children belong to God. So do yours. If they know Him, they are His sheep, and not just any old sheep, but the sheep of His pasture, and that implies that He will take care of them, fulfilling the role of Shepherd in their lives. Providing, caring for, mending, correcting, corralling, defending, and even going after them when they stray. So, how do we teach this concept to our kids...that it's better to belong to God than to feel like we belong with others? That's exactly what we're talking about on today's show. Tune in now. Helping Kids Find Worth in God Instead of Accomplishments
April 11, 2023 - 18 min
How do we teach our children to find their worth in who God says they are, rather than in what they can do? That's the question we're asking on today's episode of the podcast. It's way too easy for our children, for us, to feel that our worth comes from what we can do, and not from who we are in Christ. For our children, it can be about sports, friendships, academic success, popularity, clothing, hair...really anything. When I was growing up, and really well into my adulthood, I found most of my self-worth in making good grades, and appearing smart to those around me. I believed that if I worked hard enough, I could accomplish anything I set my mind to...and isn't that just exactly what the world tells our children? As believers, as parents who are trying to raise our children to know and love Jesus, we want our children's identities to be shaped by what God says about them, and nothing else. In fact, we want what God says about them, and about Himself, to help them stand strong when the events of their lives try to convince them of something else. But how do we do that? Join me today as we look at what God's Word has to say about who our children are, what makes them unique, their beliefs, and how the world is shaping them in ways that might not be healthy. Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide,  Praying God's Word for Your Child's Identity in Christ, by Tara L. Cole. Praying for Your Child's Identity in Christ
April 3, 2023 - 6 min
Identity is a loaded word nowadays. Identity was a struggle when we were children, especially in middle and high school. Now our kids not only navigate those challenges, but music, social media, shows, friends, and sometimes even teachers telling them that their identity is fluid and ever-changing. However, from the nightly news, we know this view is not true or helpful. Since cell phone and social media use has risen among teens, their depression and unhappiness rates have more than doubled. Obviously, the messages our children receive from those sources aren’t leading to a strong sense of self and identity. What can we do to help our kids form a healthy identity? We need to point them to God. The one unchanging constant in their lives. All month long, we're going to be taking a look at what God's Word has to say about helpng our children form their identity in Christ, and how we can find holy purpose in praying God's Word for them in this vitally important area. Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide, Praying God's Word for Your Child's Identity in Christ, by Tara L. Cole.
