There's so much sadness that can happen as we approach the season when our kids leave our home...certainly as we're in it and adjusting to the changes in our home and daily lives. But I believe this time can also be one that is brimming over with potential, and as we end our focus on parenting adult children this month, I want to leave on a high note, and give you a vision for walking into a hope-filled future. You've probably heard the quote, "Show me your 5 closest friends and I'll show you your future." I'm not sure who originally said that, but there's some truth in it. It takes an awfully strong personality and character to resist the flow, especially when the flow is carrying those closest to you, and as our children get older, it becomes harder and harder for us to control their friendships. I can tell you what kind of friends I hope my children will choose, but frankly, gone are the days when I can set up a playdate filled with children from good homes whose families will be a good influence on mine. When they're little, offering our children peace has a lot to do with the environment we create for them, our ability to control our own emotions, and just providing them with stability and routine. A safe place to live, a bed to sleep in, and dependable meals. Unconditional love. But as they grow up, their peace becomes less and less dependent upon us as their parents, and more on their own choices and relationship with Jesus.
