Root of Weariness #3: Choosing Weary over Worship
May 16, 2022 - 35 min
Weariness is a habit of the heart. Yes, you read that right. Weariness is a habit. Have you ever thought about it that way before? That weariness is something we choose? The word, "habit" can be defined as, "a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up." And implied in that definition is some kind of choice to practice that habit. Today, on the podcast Stacey Thacker and I are explaining just how weariness goes from being something we feel to being something we choose, and how we can take steps to choose something different. If you want change habits, and embrace something better, tune in now! Root of Weariness #2: Hiding Behind Pride
May 9, 2022 - 27 min
Call me crazy, but I certainly never thought I’d open a book for weary moms with the words, "Beer and Cigarettes," and yet, there they are, right at the beginning of Unraveled, chapter 1. In fact, chapters 1 and 2 of Unraveled are very vulnerable and share moments of my motherhood that most people would rather hide. I won't lie. My own parents asked me why in the WORLD I wanted to write my stories down on paper, permanently, for all the world to see! Sometimes, it does feel really vulnerable to have done this. But hiding behind pride, and then finally learning to embrace weaknesses, and giving them a proper biblical perspective is a HUGE piece of my story. Understanding their purpose, why God allows weaknesses, and even how to use them for His glory changed the way I looked at life, and even how I approached relationships outside of my family. Today, on the podcast Stacey Thacker and I are getting real about the role of weakness in motherhood. This one is going to change the way you look at things. Promise. Tune in now! Root of Weariness #1: A Misunderstanding of the Role of Motherhood
May 3, 2022 - 33 min
One of the things I personally struggled most with as a young mom, was a lack of understanding about the role of motherhood in my own life. I knew who I wanted to be for my children, and I knew what my end goal was for their lives (salvation, following hard after Jesus, etc), but somehow I forgot that motherhood is about more than just "raising little people to become thriving, Jesus-loving adults. Motherhood is also about God making me into His faithful daughter" (Stacey Thacker). When the challenges came (and they did) I saw them as a burden, proof that I couldn't be a good mom, and allowed them to make me mad at God for allowing them in the first place. It's ugly, I know, but it's the truth, and the truth was that this misunderstanding caused me weariness it didn't have to. What I needed was a more biblical perspective...a biblical understanding of the role of motherhood in my life, not just my role in my children's lives. Today, on the podcast Stacey Thacker and I are exploring just what a more biblical perspective on this looks like, and the difference it can make in the life of a weary mom. Tune in now! New Season! Getting to the Root of Weariness
May 2, 2022 - 7 min
Weariness tends to resurface over and over again throughout motherhood, and in this season, we want to help you learn to recognize it for what it is, understand why you're feeling it, and identify ways you can be refreshed. And we're not talking about a day at the spa, or a cup of whatever warm drink you prefer...although those things aren't bad. The problem is that they're temporary, and moms today need a permanent source of hope. Thankfully, Brooke McGlothlin and Stacey Thacker offer exactly that in their new book, Unraveled: Hope for Moms at the End of Their Rope. All this season, Brooke, and special guest, Stacey Thacker, will look beyond the surface to what's actually causing our weariness, by exploring three main roots: Root #1: A Misunderstanding of the Role of Motherhood. Root #2: Hiding Behind Pride. Root #3: Choosing Weary over Worship. And finally, the last week of May we'll share a bonus episode where Brooke reads chapter six of Unraveled for you. It's called, "When the Gentle Words Won't Come," and it covers an issue almost ALL moms struggle with from time-to-time—mastering their emotional response toward their children. Tune in now! {Real Prayer} What if We Don't Know How or What to Pray, with Mary DeMuth
April 4, 2022 - 20 min
Mary DeMuth wasn't raised in the church, so when she came to know Jesus, she had no idea what prayer even was. A survivor of sexual abuse, abandonment, and a challenging church plant, Mary has a depth of experience and wisdom that makes me want to listen, especially to what she has to say about prayer. In today's episode, Mary talks about how God welcomes our words, because He welcomes us, and teaches us that if we're in a dark place, and don't know what or how to pray, Jesus already knows and is praying for us. All this season, I'm interviewing REAL moms, with REAL challenges, who have overcome to have REAL, vibrant prayer lives. Their stories are, well, real, and I've picked 6 of them to share with you over the next six weeks. If you like them, follow MPM on IG at MPM and listen to them all. The ones I've chosen for this season are intended to give you a diversity of personal story, and my hope is that you'll hear your story reflected in one of theirs. Maybe in all of them. {Real Prayer} How prayer can help us regain a sense of control, with Hannah Anderson
March 28, 2022 - 28 min
And not necessarily the way you might think. Hannah Anderson is a fellow Appalachian Writer, mom, wife, and author of several books. We spent time together many years ago inside of a writers critique group that was deeply meaningful and useful for both of us. I love to listen to her speak about the rhythms, and stories, and deep faith of this beautiful area I call home. In this interview she talks about growing up a homesteader and how the need to pray for something as simple as rain set the tone for her entire prayer life, helping her realize that what seems out of our control, is not out of God's control.
