Most of the time, I am able to accept frustrations and difficulties as a part of the transformational work that God is doing either in my own life or in the lives of my children. Parenting is not easy, but it is the struggle and difficulty that cause me to run to the cross faster than anything else. But there are days when I have taken too much of it in. When I feel myself collapsing under the weight of it all. When I am at a saturation point, and there is no more room to absorb. When you are going through difficulty, do you cry out to God? A prayer based on Daniel 6:10. He spent the night wondering. Would the faithful man's God deliver him? Distressed king Darius witnessed the excellent spirit of Daniel, the noble prisoner he elevated to leadership because he was faithful. But faithfulness comes with a cost. A prayer based on Ecclesiastes 7:11-12. My daughter and I drove by Dinah's place of business one Tuesday night and there was a line out the door. “Tuesday must be half price night,” she said, with a slight laugh in her voice. The people in line were seekers. They wanted something they believed Dinah could give them. Ultimately they wanted a short cut to wisdom. Dinah’s sign says, “psychic readings.” My daughter and I both know shortcuts will not lead to true wisdom. The wisdom we were made to hunger for has a name and a Giver and they are not found at Dinah's doorstep. Have you ever sought a shortcut to wisdom? How can you seek the wisdom giver today? A prayer based on Proverbs 30:5. I sat across from my son who was struggling with math, took his paper and pencil, and wrote these words at the top of the page. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. That's Philippians 4:13. I underlined "all things," circled "through Christ," and then I told him about the first time I flew by myself. A prayer based on Luke 6:45. Yesterday, as I drove my son and his best friend to baseball practice, I overheard them talking about what they would do if they received one wish and could ask for anything they wanted. They batted around some interesting ideas like, I'd like to get good grades for the rest of school, or I'd like to never be wrong again, or even I'd like to know the outcome of every decision I make so I don't make a wrong one. As I listened, I couldn't help but wonder what I would wish for if I had the chance, and the answer came to me pretty quickly. I'd wish for my kids to follow Jesus passionately and without reserve all the days of their life. What do you really want for your children? Do you want them to be favored or to follow Christ? A prayer based on 1 Timothy 4:16. He was my daddy. I grew up watching him seek to live his life above reproach. For him, that meant a highly disciplined life, a strict routine, and staying far away from even the appearance of evil. At times, his lifestyle seemed overly rigid to me, but as I have grown and matured, I can see why he chose to live the way he did. He knew how he needed to live in order to honor the Lord and was keenly aware of the things that might tempt him toward sinful decisions. Why is it so important to live a life above reproach? A prayer based on John 10:7-11. The e-mail didn't sound right, so I forwarded it to our tech director, asking, “Can I trust this?” “No! Don't click it!” he quickly replied, and then pointed out telltale signs of a scam. We live in a day of deception. For example, the other day I googled the word hope, and found over 45 million options. Which ones can we believe? How can we know what leads to life? Can we trust what we see?
